Myofunctional Therapy

Individualized myofunctional therapy is provided to patients of all ages. After an initial evaluation and referral from the primary care physician (if needed), sessions are designed around specific goals that are drafted by the therapist and approved by the parents.  Therapy often works in conjunction with a dentist, orthodontist, ENT, periodontist, bodywork specialist, or lactation consultant in order to address the neuromuscular re-education or re-patterning of the oral and facial muscles. Therapy targets exercises, strengthening, behavior modification, dissociation, and grading of the facial and tongue to promote proper tongue position, improve breathing, chewing, and swallowing.

Consulting Services for the Parent

Depending on your situation, you may or may not be familiar with an IFSP, IEP, or how best to advocate for your child. By having an advocate at your side, you can better obtain services that will best suit your loved one in order to make the most gains. Consulting services can be provided in multiple ways including a one-on-one session prior to a meeting or a doctor’s appointment, working as an advocate and having your therapist’s attendance at an IEP or doctor’s visit, or in discussion to develop an overall plan for the patient. Further, consulting services may be used to target educationally based goals in order to generalize the skills that are being targeted in the school setting into the home (ex. Training on a device). Each parent’s education and experiences are different, and consulting services are designed to help make parent’s the expert so they can continue to be the best advocate for their child/student.
