Preparing Your Child for a CBCT X-Ray

A Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scan is a valuable diagnostic tool that provides detailed 3D images of your child’s teeth, mouth, and jaw. Preparing your child for a CBCT x-ray can help ensure a smooth and stress-free experience.

1. Explain the Procedure: Start by explaining what the CBCT scan is and why it’s necessary. Use simple language to describe the machine and the process, emphasizing that it’s quick and painless. Highlight that they need to stay still like a statue while the machine takes pictures.

2. Visit the Dentist: If possible, visit the dentist beforehand. Allow your child to see the machine and the room where the procedure will take place. This can help reduce anxiety by making the environment more familiar. Simply Communication has worked with several local offices and may even have videos to share how the x-ray looks and works!

3. Practice Staying Still: At home, practice staying still for a few seconds. This can be turned into a fun game, where your child pretends to be a statue. Explain that during the scan, they will need to stay still just like they practiced.

4. Dress Comfortably: On the day of the scan, dress your child in comfortable clothes. Avoid clothing with metal buttons or zippers, as metal objects can interfere with the x-ray images.

5. Comfort Items: Bring along a favorite toy or blanket to provide comfort. Some centers may allow your child to hold a small item during the scan.

6. Stay Calm and Positive: Your demeanor will influence your child’s emotions. Stay calm, positive, and encouraging throughout the process. Praise your child for their cooperation and bravery.

By preparing your child with these steps, you can help them feel more at ease and ensure a successful CBCT x-ray experience.
